Well it is nice to be there at the beginning, don't you agree? I have a bit of a thing about female solo recording artists, so it is nice to have 'discovered' Anna Calvi. Anna Calvi's first new album in five years is on its way.

Anna Calvi is to release a 5 track covers EP entitled ‘Strange Weather’, on 14th July 2014. Produced by Thomas Bartlett (The National, Antony and the Johnsons, Sam Amidon) and recorded in New York, the EP features covers of tracks by Suicide, David Bowie, FKA twigs, Connan Mockasin as well as a stunning collaboration with David Byrne on the title track, a cover of Keren Ann’s ‘Strange Weather’. The cover of Suicide’s Ghost Rider was recorded with drummer Matt Johnson (Jeff Buckley), and Nico Muhly contributes string arrangements to the EP opener, a deconstructed organic reworking of FKA twigs’ ‘Papi Pacify’, David Byrne said the following on working with Anna: ‘I’m a big fan of Anna's two records. 'Something would take me over whenever I'd seen an electric guitar,' she later recalled. By the age of 10 she was using a double cassette to her playing. She came to be much influenced by 20th century composers,, and, attracted 'to the impressionistic element of the music', and would try to recreate this feeling on the guitar, an instrument she was compelled to learn on discovering and at the age of 13. Calvi originally intended to study art, but instead opted for a degree in music. She attended where she studied violin and guitar, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Music in 2003. After graduating, Calvi worked as a guitar teacher, giving private lessons to help finance her music career until 2010. She never allows herself to sound truly exposed, and this adds to a sense that, for all its perceived boldness and big climaxes, the record never seems unhinged or fragile.
